Lotty Cunningham
Founder, Streetz Ahead Dance & Drama Company
The Commission’s youngest member, Lotty Cunningham is an example of how children can change the world. At the age of 13 Lotty lived and breathed dance. But she was unhappy with the lack of facilities on offer for children in Birmingham. So without a second thought, Lotty set up her own dance academy. Before long children came to Streetz Ahead for all kinds of dance and drama lessons.
Not only that but they found in Lotty’s academy a chance to express themselves, build their confidence and find new friends. Already the academy has won numerous awards and represented the country in international dance championships.
The children have performed on TV and been profiled recently in the Daily Express. The company has always been run by young people - one of Lotty’s goals since the beginning. She won funding from the Big Boost which helped her to reach more members of the community and learn some leadership skills at the summer academy. She’s now 18 years old and off to a prestigious arts university. Even though she’ll be away from the academy, Streetz Ahead will go on thanks to her incredible legacy.
